Safe. Effective. Gentle.
It's a fact of life: as we age, the natural substances that provide the skin with structure and volume decrease. The skin loses its ability to retain moisture and elasticity; therefore it sags and forms wrinkles.
Wrinkles and How They Develop
To explain in common terms how wrinkles develop, we must first go over the skin and exactly what happens that causes it to wrinkle. The skin is generally made up of 3 distinct layers. The epidermis is the outermost layer (the one you see), the dermis is the in-between layer, and the subcutaneous is the inner layer.
When a person is young, the skin does a great job of stretching and retaining moisture. The middle layer of skin, the dermis, has an elastic quality due to the fibers called elastin that help skin look and feel young (and wrinkle free). A protein found in the dermis called collagen also helps prevent wrinkles.
As you age, collagen and elastin are lost, so the skin gets thinner and has a more difficult time getting enough moisture to the epidermis. At approximately the same time, the fat in the subcutaneous layer (which gives skin a plump, firm appearance) also begins to disappear, the epidermis begins to sag, and wrinkles form. Wrinkles are then prone to form in the face where facial muscle contractions have been repeated many times over the lifetime of an individual.
There are a number of reasons why some people tend to have more wrinkles than others. Genetics, environmental conditions, diet, and lifestyle all are believed to contribute to wrinkle development. Regardless of who you are, if your facial muscles contract, wrinkles will form to one degree or another.
