One evening over 16 years ago, I received a call from the Emergency Department at North Memorial. I rushed over to the emergency room, and met Lora Schuster, a delightful 8 year old with a large fish hook in her eye! Rather than sticking to her eyelid, the fish hook had in fact penetrated the cornea, lacerating the iris and the lens. My first surgical procedure was to make a large incision to remove the fish hook. I then
removed the damaged lens, and subsequently performed a laser capsulotomy to remove a film that had formed across the pupil and implanted a secondary IOL to help Lora see with glasses alone.
Years later when Lora's prescription had stabilized, I was able to successfully perform laser vision correction. Having last examined in July 2008, I am excited to say that Lora is now able to see without any correction, whatsoever!!!
Looking back to the fateful evening in 1992, it is a long, miraculous road Lora and I have shared together. I hope you will enjoy the original story from 1992, which you can find at the following link: Lora Schuster Story .
While Lora's story is unique and represents a miracle in which I am extremely proud to say I played a significant role, I made the decision to partner with Dr. Stephen & Craig Joffe in Joffe MediCenter because they, too, share my lifetime commitment to patient care. I hope we may have the opportunity to share this collective commitment and experience with you, your family, and friends.
